AHS Arizona-Mexico Transboundary Scholarship
The Arizona Hydrological Society (AHS) is pleased to announce an addition to their scholarship offerings: the AHS Arizona-Mexico Transboundary Scholarship. The $2000 scholarship is open on a competitive basis to under-graduate and graduate level students enrolled at an Arizona university or college whose research involves a scientific or policy topic related to transboundary water resources along the Arizona-Mexico border.
Why now? The AHS Foundation has received a legacy donation to fund the scholarship in the future. A legacy donation is one that the AHS Foundation will receive upon the donor’s death and settlement of their estate. The bequest comes with a request to use the donation to endow one annual AHS scholarship to a student whose research involves a scientific or policy topic related to transboundary water resources along the Arizona-Mexico border. In the meantime, the donor has suggested that they will make an annual contribution toward the scholarship to get it started. This annual donation, along with your financial support, and other donations by the AHS and AHS Foundation to this specific scholarship, will bring the initial award amount to $2000. Why is this important? Transboundary water management involves complex diplomatic, environmental, hydrological, and social considerations. It's not just about dividing up water rights. It is about coordinating water quality protection, managing groundwater resources, and making sound water management decisions, thereby ensuring sustainable use for communities on both sides of the Arizona-Mexico border. AHS needs to be in the forefront of these issues.
What’s next? AHS has recruited a team of experts in the study of transboundary water resources management from the universities, agencies, and private individuals. This team is enthusiastic about this student opportunity. They will review applications and select the awardee. The award for 2025 will be presented at the AHS Symposium Awards Luncheon on October 3, 2025 at Wekopa Golf Resort.
